New Grants Fund Transdisciplinary Teams to Tackle Tough Questions.  Elaine Wethington is co-investigator on three new grants which address different research questions, but all have something in common… they involve established experts from multiple disciplines coming together to tackle tough problems in health care.

She has been awarded two new grants that will build our understanding of the mechanisms of learning in young children with important implications for the study of cognitive development as well as for early childhood education and parenting.

Elementary School Students Thinking Like a Scientist in Elementary School.  Second-graders in an Ithaca elementary school classroom are learning the underlying concepts of science through innovative lesson plans focused on the central theme of food and eating behavior. The underlying goal of the curriculum is to teach students to use the scientific method to solve problems.
workshop Consensus Workshops Bring Researchers and Practitioners Together.  When older people fall, experience chronic pain, or become socially isolated, a cascade of health problems tend to follow. Cornell researchers have developed an innovative method to bring researchers and practitioners together to address these critical problems.
CYFAR 2009 Featured Cornell Research and Extension!  The environment of childhood poverty, effective youth programs, parenting skills, and racial identity, were among the many presentations featuring Cornell research and extension at the CYFAR conference this year in Baltimore. Poverty and Maternal Responsiveness  One of the reasons poverty is bad for children is because it reduces maternal responsiveness. This study by Gary Evans and colleagues sheds light on why.
HD Extension Program on Retiree Environmental Volunteerism and Civic Engagement Moving Ahead  Unique opportunities are provided by three major trends - enormous growth in the population of older adults; the need for this population to be meaningfully engaged beyond retirement; and pressing environmental problems.
4-H Students Practice Thinking Like Scientists  This program aims to teach youth about the scientific method, scientific research, and what it is like to be a practicing scientist, in addition to teaching everyday critical thinking skills.
Operation 4 Cooperation: Youth/Law Enforcement Summit  Police officers and youth come together to brainstorm ways to build healthier relationships in this event hosted by the CITY Project.

Poverty and Chaos  Chaotic living conditions can interfere with the development of healthy, well adjusted children. This article, based on a presentation at the First Urie Bronfenbrenner Conference at Cornell in October 2007, summarizes the connections between poverty, chaotic living environments, and child development.
Early Education Study Results Released  The results of a study looking at early education in rural New York State suggest that there may be less capacity for early care and education in rural areas.
Research-Based Outreach: Albert Bandura's Model  A multi-disciplinary, multi-stage approach is essential for improving the design and delivery of outreach. Simply disseminating research-based information is not enough as the volume of information multiplies and electronic technology makes information more easily accessible.
CITY Project Receives Award  Teens participating in the CITY Project in Broome County received this year's "Restoring the Pride: Youth Leadership Award" from the City of Binghamton.

Her findings demonstrate that infants are learning about their language well before they speak their language.

Child Development and the Physical Environment.  Research by Dr. Gary Evans reveals that the physical environment—noise, overcrowding, and housing and neighborhood quality—profoundly influences child development outcomes and parenting behavior.
New Nursing Home Quality Care Project.  The Cornell Institute for Translational Research on Aging and the ILR school have teamed up to look at how new medical information technologies affect employees and residents in nursing homes. The premise of the project is that saving paper may save lives and improve labor relations.
